Snowgum Films

  June, 2008

Yes - okay - fair call - we realise we skimped in not producing a newsletter last month, but trust us when we say we've been busy little bees. In fact – we’ve been so busy, I’m not even going to cover half of what we’ve been up to in this newsletter.

I’m also aware that this newsletter is just sliding in, in making it into this month. In fact – in New Zealand, it’s not even this month any more – but next month. Some of you in fact (if you’re in Hawaii for example), will receive this almost a day before I finish writing it. So we’re all good... except obviously for the Kiwis.

In this newsletter we cover the Snowgumathlon, get pimped by West Side Shorts, rave about the fact we’re now getting paid work, and promise to tackle the hundreds of emails that are currently sitting in my inbox untouched.

 Snowgumathlon

SnowgumathlonOur first ever Snowgumathlon (celebrating 5 years of not going under), was a great success with Gertrude's Brown Couch having its upper level stuffed with a very respectable crowd (that is, the size of the crowd was respectable… not the actual crowd itself which mainly consisted of drunk filmmakers). An enjoyable night was had by all and it was certainly the best party I’ve been to thus far this year.

Several awards were given out during the night to people who I felt had done outstanding work with us, with an award dedicated to each year. Without these people, we simply wouldn’t be who we are... I can never thank them enough. The list of awards runs below:

2004: Brendan Penny
2005: Saraj Alkemade
2006: Christian Bloch
2007: Dale Bamford
2008: Ahren Morris

There are others who certainly deserve awards: Emily McGregor, Daniel Yun, Stephen Wyley, Troy Larkin and John Jenkins spring to mind. I love you all, your art has been spectacular.

We also premiered a montage covering the last five years... it features a fair bit of unseen footage, so if you’re interested you can check it out here.

Any rumours that I was drunk to the point of slurring my introductions and screwing up the names of my closest friends are almost entirely falsified.

 Commercial Work
Commercial WorkThe main reason we’ve been kept busy, is because we’re managed to pick up some work creating television segments for Mammoth Events (a nightclub promotions company in Melbourne). Now, obviously this is far from what you’ve come to expect from us; but it does allow us to put some pocket money back into some of our more story-based projects (*cough* Troll Bridge *cough*). The segments have been running on Channel 10 here, but you can of course also check them out online in our new Commercials section.

 Forums
Last newsletter we had a contest which would give a DVD copy away of Goldilocked, Undead Ted, The Morning After and Run Rincewind Run! to one lucky forum poster. The winner by random selection is illitrate, who happened to be the only forum poster! We can only assume that the forum was a bad idea, the contest was a bad idea, the internet has died, or the entire population of the planet has died. Personally I blame the Russians.

Well done illitrate! Be sure to get in contact with me so I can send you the goody bag!

 Screenings
Official Selection - West Side ShortsScreenings wise we’ve had a few which we a) either didn’t get time to tell you about, or b) didn’t get given a lot of notice that it was happening.

In the latter category, Goldilocked, Undead Ted and Run Rincewind Run! screened over the weekend at ApolloCon in Texas. I’m not sure exactly when they ran – but we’ll be sure to update the Screenings page when we know. All I know, is I'm glad they did!

Also this month Goldilocked screened for West Side Shorts. And next Month (July), The Morning After will be screening for their horror themed evening. If you’re in Melbourne you should certainly come along and check it out!
